National Coverage of the Responsibility towards Socially & Economically Disadvantaged: A Community Structure Approach (2009)
This research paper examines national coverage of 28 newspapers on the topic of homelessness in the United States. By utilizing the community structure approach, we were able to examine how community characteristics would affect journalistic coverage of the issue of homelessness. Because of the significance of the research, our group hopes to submit this essay to the National Communication Association, the New Jersey Communication Association, and the Eastern Communication Association in 2010.
The Boston Photographs: The Power of Photojournalism (2009)
This essay explores the potency of photojournalism and questions the ethics of newspaper editor’s decision to capitalize off of sensationalist material. The main topic discussed involves a set of controversial photos: the Boston Photographs. Images consisted of a young woman falling to her death after a fire escape broke during a fire.
The Bennett-Woods Debate and Normative Theories of the Media (2009)
This essay examines the arguments of William J. Bennett and actor James Woods in a debate that ensued shortly after Bob Dole’s attack on Hollywood during his 1995 presidential campaign. The debate questions the morals of both film studios and record labels for producing violent Hollywood films and offensive rap music.
Second Life Reflection: The Spiral of Silence Theory (2009)
With the advent of various new media channels, it is wise to question their applicability to traditional communication theories. This essay examines Second Life and the communication theory the spiral of silence. Results from this paper were also presented at a faulty-led workshop alongside communications professor Dr. Yifeng Hu.
