Biography

I am a 23-year old communication studies major at The College of New Jersey (TCNJ) in Ewing, New Jersey. My main focus is in public and mass communication with a concentration in health communications. I am also in the process of completing a minor in communication disorders and speech pathology.

Prior to TCNJ, I attended a small business school in New York City called the Laboratory Institute of Merchandising where my main focus was marketing in the fashion industry. During my time at this institution, I completed an internship with Donna Karan International where I assisted the marketing coordinator for DK Collection. In addition to acquiring an internship, I was one of fifteen students chosen to study abroad in London, England at the University of Westminster for the spring 2008 semester. This opportunity allowed me to experience the international market with an internship at Purple PR. Shortly after returning from London I decided to transfer to TCNJ to pursue a different career track: health communications.

My decision to transfer to TCNJ was originally aimed at pursing a degree that would prepare me for a career in advertising. Although this aspiration is still at the forefront of my career goals, I have narrowed my degree to focus specifically on the creation of health campaigns. I am currently in the process of completing a course (Health Communication Campaigns) that has allowed me to use my creativity to design an effective campaign based off data collected from surveys. I enjoy the challenge of designing campaigns that will help foster healthy habits and discourage practices that may be detrimental to one’s health. My current and ongoing participation in the Public Health Communications Club grants me the opportunity to promote healthy lifestyles among fellow students around campus.

After completing my communications degree I hope to attend graduate school to further my interest in the health field with a master’s degree in health communications. In addition to graduate school, I hope to acquire an advertising internship that will provide me with greater knowledge of campaign implementation and effective elements that increase message comprehension and compliance.

Written Work

Attached are several examples of previous papers written for courses at The College of New Jersey. Please find below each title a description of the paper’s content.

National Coverage of the Responsibility towards Socially & Economically Disadvantaged: A Community Structure Approach (2009)
This research paper examines national coverage of 28 newspapers on the topic of homelessness in the United States. By utilizing the community structure approach, we were able to examine how community characteristics would affect journalistic coverage of the issue of homelessness. Because of the significance of the research, our group hopes to submit this essay to the National Communication Association, the New Jersey Communication Association, and the Eastern Communication Association in 2010.

The Boston Photographs: The Power of Photojournalism (2009)
This essay explores the potency of photojournalism and questions the ethics of newspaper editor’s decision to capitalize off of sensationalist material. The main topic discussed involves a set of controversial photos: the Boston Photographs. Images consisted of a young woman falling to her death after a fire escape broke during a fire.

The Bennett-Woods Debate and Normative Theories of the Media (2009)
This essay examines the arguments of William J. Bennett and actor James Woods in a debate that ensued shortly after Bob Dole’s attack on Hollywood during his 1995 presidential campaign. The debate questions the morals of both film studios and record labels for producing violent Hollywood films and offensive rap music.

Second Life Reflection: The Spiral of Silence Theory (2009)
With the advent of various new media channels, it is wise to question their applicability to traditional communication theories. This essay examines Second Life and the communication theory the spiral of silence. Results from this paper were also presented at a faulty-led workshop alongside communications professor Dr. Yifeng Hu.

Presentations

In addition to written course materials, I would like to share some presentations I have completed and presented during my time at The College of New Jersey. Please find below each title a description of the presentations content.

Breast Cancer Awareness (2009)
This presentation focused on basic breast cancer facts and provided the audience with the various resources available to prevent this disease. In addition to the presentation, hand-outs were distributed that instructed women how to administer self-exams.

Health Care Reform: a Conservative Perspective (2009)
This presentation was complied with three other group members in an attempt to persuade the audience to favor an alternative to government run health care. All groups were given a perspective and instructed to appeal to audience’s frame of reference.

Health Campaigns

With a passion for designing campaign messages, I would like to share two sample campaigns created for health communications. Please find below each title a description of the campaigns purpose.

The Dangers of Artificial Sweeteners (2009)
This campaign was created in a health communication course and focused on the dangers of artificial sweeteners (i.e. aspartame, saccharine, sucralose, etc.). The main goal of the campaign attempted to persuade our target audience to reduce their intake of artificial sweeteners. This campaign incorporated various media outlets including: print ads, food blogs, billboards, e-mail newsletters, and coffee koozies. All channels were chosen based off a survey taken by our target audience of women ages 18-30.

Adolescent Involvement in Gangs (2009)
This campaign was designed in a course titled Theories of Persuasion. Our assignment was to construct a campaign message based upon a current issue and analyze the strengths and weakness of the messages. I chose to focus on adolescent involvement in gangs and target teachers due to their ability to witness early signs of gang association. Materials include a print advertisement and a brochure.

Academic Honors and Activities

My education has always been an important aspect of my life and I have always strived to do my best in all areas of study. Throughout my college career I have always maintained high academic success. At the Laboratory Institute of Merchandising I was placed on both the Presidents List and Dean’s List for a cumulative GPA of 4.0. I have continued to maintain a 4.0 GPA at The College of New Jersey both overall and in my major. During the fall 2009 semester I was inducted into the Lambda Pi Eta Communications Honor Society and invited to join the Golden Key International Honor Society.

In addition to honors, I have been active in several clubs in the communications department at TCNJ. I am currently a member of Public Health Communication Club and Communication Studies Club. The Public Health Club has been actively involved in organizing health awareness campaigns around campus such as “Safe Oral Sex.” We have also invited key guest speakers to our campus including industry professionals and TCNJ alumni to speak about the industry and career opportunities.

At my previous college, I was an active member in the organization Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE). Here I attended training seminars hosted by the Bottomless Closet to teach financially disadvantage women resume and interview skills for re-entering the work force. Work attire was also provided for these women to allow them to start a new chapter in their lives.

2 friends, 12 cities, 21 days

Last April, I traveled Europe and lived out of a backpack for twenty-one days. Although I experienced many sleepless nights and a bit of malnutrition, I would do it again in a heartbeat. My journey started in Berlin, Germany and I made around to Barcelona, Spain. I invite you to browse through my attached album to view my travels and the beautiful sites I was able to explore. Enjoy!
